About the Legislative Arm

The Legislative Arm of the Lagos Island Local Government is the law‑making body responsible for enacting by‑laws, ensuring effective oversight of the executive arm, and representing the collective interests of the people within the area.

As a vital component of grassroots governance, the legislature is committed to promoting accountability, transparency, and inclusive development across all communities on Lagos Island.

The legislative council operates in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the guiding principles of Lagos State local government. Through robust debates, motions, and resolutions, councillors continuously advocate for improved service delivery, social welfare, security, and economic advancement for residents.

Leadership and Membership

Council Leadership
  • Leader of the House — Provides strategic direction, presides over legislative sessions, and ensures smooth operations of the council's business.
  • Deputy Leader — Supports the Leader of the House and coordinates legislative functions in their absence.
  • Majority Leader — Leads the majority caucus and manages legislative business on behalf of the ruling party.
  • Deputy Majority Leader — Assists the Majority Leader and coordinates caucus activities in their absence.
  • Chief Whip — Ensures party discipline within the House and facilitates coordination among members.
  • Deputy Chief Whip — Supports the Chief Whip in maintaining order, tracking attendance, and coordinating voting schedules.

Role of the Legislators

Each legislator represents a ward on Lagos Island, ensuring that community voices are reflected in council deliberations and policy decisions.

  • Sponsoring and debating motions and by‑laws that improve local governance.
  • Promoting grassroots development initiatives.
  • Monitoring budgets, projects, and programs to ensure proper implementation.
  • Serving as a bridge between the council and residents of each ward.
  • Advocating for youth empowerment, infrastructure, education, and social welfare.
